Nappinai NS, Advocate Supreme Court and Founder CyberSaathi
Ms. Nappinai is an Advocate practising in the Supreme Court and the Bombay High Court specialising inter alia in Constitutional, Criminal, IPR and Cyberlaws. She has handled cases pertaining to constitutional matters, white collar offences and commercial litigations and arbitrations including to protect against IPR violations for media, entertainment, software and technology companies. She is Advisor – Maharashtra Cyber Police.
Ms. Nappinai is Amicus Curiae before the Supreme Court of India (IN RE: PRAJWALA LETTER DATED 18.2.2015 (VIDEOS OF SEXUAL VIOLENCE AND RECOMMENDATIONS)). Ms. Nappinai has undertaken pro bono work in constitutional matters dealing inter alia with offences against women and children; represented victims inter alia of sexual harassment; illegal lotteries and cybercrimes. She is a Mediator, trained in India and at World Intellectual Property Organisation, Geneva (“WIPO”) and was on the first Panel of Mediators of the Bombay High Court. She has undertaken several Mediations pro bono.
A pioneer in cyberlaws with over two decades of expertise, Ms. Nappinai has lent her expertise in training of Judges (including from SAARC Countries and also separately Judges from Sri Lanka and Bangladesh) at the National Judicial Academy, Bhopal, India; Government agencies and Police; armed personnel and intelligence agencies at the National Police Academy, Hyderabad, India and at various other police academies. She is a speaker at International and National Conferences spearheaded by legal and Industry organisations.
Ms. Nappinai has authored the seminal book on cyberlaws titled “Technology Laws Decoded” and her Manual on Copyright Laws was used for Judicial Training. Her forthcoming publications are in the field of Emerging Technologies (2020). She has published several incisive articles including on constitutional issues, cyberlaws, electronic evidence and IPR, in legal journals and leading newspapers and magazines and these have directly impacted policy changes.
Ms. Nappinai is alumna of the Stanford CDDRL Draper Hills Fellowship program on Democracy, Development and Rule of Law (2019); Chevening Cyber Security, Cyber Policy & Governance Fellowship (2016); and International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) – IPR (2005). Ms. Nappinai was recognised as Expert in Information & Communications Technology Laws by Who’s Who Legal, UK and The International Who’s Who of Business Lawyers, UK (2011 & 2012) and is the recipient of the Client Choice Awards (London) for the IT & Internet (India) – 2015.
She is part of several Government Committees, including the one constituted by the Supreme Court in Re: Prajwala. She has presented before the Government Committees on Cryptocurrencies; and also before the Government Committee for Revisions to Information Technology Act, 2000; and Government Committee for Revisions to Electronic Evidence Laws of India. Ms. Nappinai was co-opted, as Expert on the Tamil Nadu Government Committee For formulating Child Policy. She is Senior Panel Advocate – Ministry of Railways.
Ms. Nappinai is on the Advisory Board of Civil Society Organisations dealing with initiatives for creating safe spaces online for women and children. She is founder member of Technology Law Forum.
