Breaking the silence around Street Sexual Harassment
On 5th April, 2017, as a part of the National Service Scheme Fest of Miranda House College (Delhi University), Safecity Voluteers were back again with some exciting activities for all. The activities were organized in association with www.stopstreetharassment.org to bring about awareness regarding the Anti Street Harassment Week 2017 (2nd April 2017-8th April 2017). Along with that, we also combined our central theme #BreakTheSilence and set up a photo booth.
In the hand-made placards, volunteers altered some of the prevalent stereotypical notions. For instance, the volunteers changed the lyrics of some famous yet demeaning Bollywood songs and given them a fresher outlook. The students of the college appreciated this effort and took their first step forward in breaking the silence by participating. The students chose the placard they strongly felt for and thereby by getting clicked with it, supported us. The idea behind the activity was simple but extremely meaningful. It was to familiarize everyone with the notion that they too could showcase their opinion and oppose such views which were in any way belittling women.
Apart from this activity, the volunteers also demonstrated a practical working of the SafecityBot wherein a map of Delhi was glued to the wall and everyone present there was invited to mark places in Delhi as Safe using the Green Dots and Unsafe using the Red Dots. This enabled them to understand better as to what and how exactly the actions were being carried out on the Safecity webpage.
All in all, the event turned out to be one of the best with so many of them showing support and valuing the efforts of the entire Safecity Team. We hope, that through these activities, the Safecity team can leave a mark on them and that they too will unite with us to carry forward this mission of making cities safer and better and by helping us pin the creeps.
