Safecity Monthly Updates- November 2023

Safecity is committed to creating safer communities for everyone. Our goal is to empower citizens by helping them understand the potential risks they could face in different neighborhoods. We can do this by sharing our experiences or others anonymously and make these stories available for all. The platform serves law enforcement agencies with information on sexual harassment and other crimes occurring in public and private spaces. The platform’s data helps keep public spaces safe by enabling authorities to keep track of incidents and prevent sexual harassment in the future.

Safety Champion Fellowship Program

Red Dot Foundation conducted a Safety Champion Fellowship Program in collaboration with UN-Habitat and Her City. The theme aligned with the Urban Thinkers Campus theme: Engendering THE CITY WE NEED.

Students in the age group 17-35 years from around the country were invited to participate, forming teams of 2-4 persons seeking practical, hyperlocal, and inclusive solutions surrounding these 4 public areas: Transportation, Sanitation, Entertainment Zone, and Tourist spots aligned with at least one of the following themes using the Safecity App:

Category 1: Engendering Urban Planning and Design

Category 2: Engendering Inclusion and Equality

Category 3:  Engendering Peace and Safety

With the help of masterclasses, the teams embarked on their projects over 5 months.

We are happy to share feedback from the project:

“Having had the opportunity to work with the Red Dot Foundation, I can attest to the impactful nature of the Safety Champion Fellowship program. The initiative’s dedication to fostering positive change aligns seamlessly with the values of inclusivity and welfare.

During my tenure, I had the privilege of spearheading a project focused on addressing the challenges faced by blind individuals. Our team worked tirelessly to provide practical solutions, aiming to enhance the overall well-being of this community.

The program’s commitment to driving social change is commendable, and the collaborative spirit within the fellowship creates an environment conducive to innovation and progress. The experience has not only enriched my understanding of the issues at hand but has also empowered me to be an advocate for positive change.

I appreciate the opportunity to contribute to such a meaningful cause and look forward to witnessing the continued impact of the Safety Champion Fellowship program.” – Ankur Parmar, Team Change Makers

Visit by German Delegation from Global Bridges

“Through November and December, Sassoon Dock, which is usually cordoned off from public access, is now an experiential exhibition, where artists from all around the world showcase their art.  So we grabbed this opportunity and took the German delegation from Global Bridges to the 142-year-old Sasoon Dock.

We then visited Matunga Station.  This station has found a place in the Limca Book of Records 2018 for having an all-woman staff. The staff has been handling all operations of the station round-the-clock, it includes personnel from the RPF, commercial, and operating departments. The excitement was clearly visible from both sides. Our guests were eager to listen and the staff was enthusiastic to tell their stories.” – Parinita Tyagi, Asst. Manager – Projects & Events

In Anticipation of 16 Days of Activism

The Consulate General of Mexico and the Consulate General of Spain organized an afternoon of exchange of experiences in Consular Cases concerning foreign women in Mumbai on 27th November 2023. This event builds on previous work of consular missions in Mumbai to address domestic violence and women empowerment in Mumbai. On this occasion, the objective was to share experiences, contacts, and best practices concerning consular cases that have women as primary subjects or victims. The event  highlighted the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence (an annual international campaign that kicked off on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and ran until 10 December, Human Rights Day),

The format aimed to have a dynamic and fruitful discussion on consular assistance related to women, especially on victims of domestic abuse. The objective was not to hear the national positions or work on the issue, but rather to have an open discussion kickstarted by the presentation of concrete cases of consular assistance to women in Mumbai.
