Digital Security for Women
On 17th May 2019, Vishal Manve @VishalManve12 conducted a Tweetchat on Digital Security for Women-
The Tweetchat was joined by guest @Natrani, who lives between Myanmar and Pakistan. She shed light on the state of digital security in Pakistan and how women are navigating the space. She explained how women and minorities cannot fully participate due to limitations like cultural norms, abuse and harassment. The women from middle class and lower income groups in Pakistan set up social media accounts using aliases and unrelated profiles. Though this anonymity allows them to participate in online discussions they are not very liberating due to lack of female role models who they can relate with. The audience also discussed the absence of proactive laws to tackle cyber bullying or harassment. The chat ended by asking the audience for suggestions to ensure gender equality and safe spaces for women and minorities on the internet in South Asia.
