Safecity Emerging Leader : Karishma Jangid
I am Karishma Shankarlal Jangid – a blogging intern at Safecity. Born and brought up in Mumbai, I am pursuing media currently. Though my introduction can include a number of things – from my nerdy zeal for reading to the philosophical apprehensions that define me, I will much rather introduce myself as a liberal feminist – all thanks to Safecity!
It was the beginning of my academic year, when I heard there’s a seminar being held by Safecity regarding awareness about sexual harassment. Luckily, I attended it. Unlike other seminars, this seminar gave me a full toned idea of what sexual harassment really means and the solutions taught to me were the laws in our constitution rather than “avoid going out late night” or “carry pepper spray”! I applied to volunteer with them and the next thing I know is – I am a blogger at Safecity. I joined somewhere around August, 2017 and I am still working with Safecity.
Now, when I say I write blogs for Safecity – there’s a lot of context attached to this sentence. Safecity has stretched out an entire world in front of me, which shows me that there’s more to life than my regular college schedule; there are matters in question like sexual objectification which are right in front of us but we are so habitual to them, that we don’t even view them as an issue to worry about. There are crimes like Female Genital Mutilation, which most of us have no clue about and despite all these issues, there are women, who are fighting for their rights so boldly that you cannot resist admiring them. Reading about a crime in newspaper is easy but when you write about it – you dig deep, research it thoroughly and somehow on the way connect yourself with it, which helps you greatly in realizing your responsibilities, duties and rights. Safecity has in the true form made me AWARE of my society.
Even though I am not out there helping anyone – joining a candle march or fighting for someone else’s rights, I still have a chance to bring issues in front of people, which deserve and demand our attention at this very moment. I even handle Safecity’s Instagram account, which again has connected me to the world in a positive manner. All these organizations that work along with Safecity for creating a better world, give you idea about what all you can do to help this society and become a better citizen and human.
