Explaining consent and why we need it- Safecity Workshop
Naina Jha conducted a workshop for the male students of STD XIIth, DAV BSEB School, Patna on 23rd August 2019. The workshop began by discussing topics like sex and gender. They were asked whether both are the same thing or different. Surprisingly, none of the students answered the question. Therefore, the concept of sex and gender was explained to them by using examples.
The conversation then moved on towards the concept of harassment. Most of the students were aware of the term ‘harassment’. When asked about sexual harassment, the students unanimously agreed that harassing a girl physically is sexual harassment. They were of the opinion that only girls are the victims of sexual harassment. Therefore, Naina taught the definition and types of sexual harassment to the students. Various laws regarding sexual harassment were also addressed. The students were also taught the concept of consent with special emphasis on the importance of asking for consent.
Then they reviewed men’s role in curbing sexual harassment and how can we help those facing sexual harassment by being active and aware. Few boys confirmed that earlier they have been bystanders while witnessing a case of sexual harassment. However, they pledged to fight sexual harassment actively henceforth.
