100 Unsafe Areas: Delhi/ NCR
Every city has safe and unsafe zones – sometimes its the lack of street lights, a very lonely stretch, a very crowded area, lack of any public transport, an alley or a street that has nooks and corners that can be used to hide. There could be many reasons why these spaces are considered unsafe.
Since September 2013 our team has been documenting evidence of sexual harassment and abuse in public space in Delhi and NCR.
From the data set it is evident that the top 3 places are – Connaught Place, Okhla and Rohini and each of these have shown a different trend of harassment. e.g CP has more of touching and groping whilst Rohini is more of chain snatching and Okhla has staring, ogling and taking pictures with mobile phones.
We are continuing to map the 100 Unsafe places and with the help of urban planners we wish to identify the built up environment’s infrastructural deficiencies so that we can further make recommendations to the government and police through the help of our partners at WhyPoll.
We have been reaching out to people through our youth volunteers and partners at GotStared at and AISEC Delhi. Our volunteers have done workshops, done street plays, interviewed people, done audits of areas in the day and at night and taken part in rallys.
This campaign is jointly run with WhyPoll Foundation.
