Need for Economic Empowerment of Women
On 11th Jan 2019, Varsha Bhargavi @VarshaBhargavi conducted a tweetchat on the ‘Need for Economic Empowerment of Women’.
Varsha began the chat with a startling fact that the labour force participation rate among all Indian women is 27% and a mere 19% in urban areas. With this the audience was asked for suggestions on ways to bring more women into workforce and empower them financially. Varsha also asked the audience to think about strategies on retaining more women in the workplaces to ensure that their career growth was assured irrespective of their marital status or motherhood. Sexual harassment and casual sexism in the workplace was also discussed. Both male and female participants in the audience shared experiences of observing sexism and shared ideas on creating harassment free work spaces devoid of casual sexism. Varsha then asked the audience about the roles and responsibilities of men in creating creating a safer work environment for women and stressed on how important it is to build camaraderie among women in order to reduce workplace harassment.
