Safecity Emerging Leader : Krupa Savajiyani
I am Krupa Savajiyani and I am a law student. My beautiful journey with Safecity began five months ago as a blogging intern. I had a dream to someday write something which was beneficial and related to society. Safecity gave me a wonderful platform where I blogged and shared through my articles awareness relating to human rights and sexual violence in the society and I thank Ms. Renita for guiding me wonderfully with my work as a blogger. Since this was my first internship, everything was a new experience for me but with the help of Safecity’s wonderful members I completed all my tasks. The journey was wonderful as I met new people. I became more aware of what was happening around me because of my research topics. I heard stories of both violence and those who fought back for justice.
I also volunteered for Safecity’s on-ground work when they conducted safety audits at the railway stations and street markets. Through the questionnaires, I got to know how people in different areas were facing violence and helped create awareness about sexual violence and its different forms since most thought it was restricted to rape alone. It was indeed an amazing experience as I was always ready to learn something from all the events I attended at Safecity. Through the safety audits I met Ms. Vandita who is very knowledgeable and inspired me to work with Safecity. I thank Ms. Jessica for being a wonderful Volunteer Engagement Officer. When I joined Safecity I was still trying to figure my way but she was very humble and guided me whenever I required. It’s appreciable work that Safecity does in reaching out to many people and inspiring them to walk ahead in all walks of life. Many women and youngsters who felt they had nowhere to go to and share their problems relating to abuse or violence found in Safecity the support they needed and a platform for their voices to be heard.
Safecity works on the premise of of making locations safer by creating awareness about one’s rights and breaking the silence around sexual harassment. The kind of atmosphere Safecity provided was so inspiring and motivating that it gave me a platform to grow. I had never thought I could meet many new people and get the satisfaction of contributing to society at such a young age. The Global Vital Voices Mentoring Walk was amazing as I met a wonderful mentor who shared her knowledge with me which helped me envision my future. The Panel Discussion during Anti-Street Harassment week was very informative as issues, that we as a society face, were discussed.
I had never imagined that I would learn so much from my very first internship. I got a chance to express my ideas and opinions about issues and working with the team gradually made me feel more inspired to do something for society. I received immense support from all of them through my journey with them. I would definitely say that working with them was great and wish more people could join. It gave me an identity at the age of 19 and being a part of social work gave a boost to my confidence. I soon got comfortable sharing my ideas and got to learn much more.
I look forward to continue working with them and being a part of Safecity, be it blogging, policy making, managing, organizing events etc. Thank you, to all the members of Safecity for helping and guiding me in my very first internship in such an amazing and wonderful manner.
