Safecity Emerging leader: Shripriya Bansal
I was a policy intern for Safecity on the Sexual Harassment at Railway Stations Policy Project. I got to know about this opening and the work that Safecity does through Vandita Morarka, who is the Policy and legal Officer at Safecity.
My internship involved on-ground work, legal research, designing assessment tools and designing policy based interventions. The work was strongly people-centred and involved real lived experiences of people as a basis for our policy solutions.
The most challenging and equally eye opening aspect of my internship was the interactions with other persons – approaching people to create awareness regarding sexual harassment brought to light for me how sexual harassment has become part of everyday life for so many people. Not only did they not consider several kinds of sexual harassment as sexual harassment – there was a strong silence around the issue in general.
The overall experience of interning with Safecity have been wonderful. I have gained immensely in terms of communication skills and the guidance of the team has helped me gain new perspectives on several key issues.
I have strongly been interested in addressing sexual harassment in public spaces and Safecity provided me an apt platform to do so. The policy team was fabulous, warm and open to new ideas – the team was a pleasure to work with. The Safecity team is also very open to new ideas and I love how they’ve always encouraged me to take initiative. It was a privilege to be a part of Safecity!
