Our work was featured by Deutsche Welle TV in their Founders Valley programme by film maker Carmen Meyer. The theme of the episode is Breaking the Silence around Sexual violence. She interviewed ElsaMarie D’Silva and our team of Campus Ambassadors, volunteers and Vanshika Siya Deswal, our Youth Outreach Officer who spoke about our work as well as their personal stories. While the stories made us teary-eyed, they gave us immense strength and hope to fight for elimination of violence against women.

National Girl Child Day 2019
On the occasion of National Girl Child Day on 24th January 2019, Safecity Campus Ambassadors visited Bachyion Ka Ghar Orphanage near Jama Masjid, Old Delhi. The intent was to meet with the young girls, and talk to them about their dreams and ask them why they were happy to be girls. The purpose was to generate a spark of happiness and a sense of pride attached to their own sex, which is directly or indirectly subjected to prejudices since an early age.
On #NationalGirlChildDay, the girls in Delhi’s shelter home told us why they were proud to be girls and what they aspired to be.
Safecity Poll at City Level Youth Symposium by SNEHA
On the 10th and 11th of January, Society for Nutrition, Education & Health Action (SNEHA) organised a city level symposium for the youth of Mumbai. In collaboration, Safecity conducted a Safety Poll. Vihang Jumle, our Monitoring & Evaluation Officer and Lead Data Analyst explained what Safecity does to the audience before the polls began. The live poll was meant for the participants present at the venue, which consisted of a mixed crowded, and targeted Safecity’s main agenda to track sexual harassment. The poll was designed by the Monitoring & Evaluation Team of Safecity in collaboration with Sneha. The poll was in form of an elaborate questionnaire which asked the participants about the details of their encounters with sexual harassment, such as time, location, age, type, etc., and these results were aggregated and presented to the participants at the end of the program. The poll touched upon various other aspects of harassment such as solutions to the problem, if the participants reported the incident to the police and bystander intervention. A few insights from the poll have been presented below. A detailed analysis of the poll would be soon available on the safecity website.

Nirbhaya Mai, Asifa Mai
Conceptualised and Directed by Supreet K Singh, this short film reminds us of the many gruesome cases of sexual harassment in our country in an attempt to be more sensitive and empathetic regarding sexual harassment, so that we, as a society, can take collective steps towards reducing it. By reminding us that Nirbhaya could’ve been our mother, our sister, our daughter, our friend or even us, this short film calls out to each one of us to take a stand against gender-based violence and to make our cities safer.
That’s all for this month. Keep watching this space and we’ll keep you updated on all our work and exciting activities every month!
