Sexual violence is a global pandemic. One in three women experiences sexual or physical violence – most likely from their intimate partner, according to a report from the World Health Organization. There is an urgent need to increase sensitization regarding sexual violence and the awareness of consent and sexual violence amongst persons at large. In this series, we examine sexual violence and related issues that have come up in the news, on a weekly basis, published every Saturday. This is an attempt to improve awareness regarding incidents of sexual violence and related matters, so that we, as a society can take steps towards collective action to reduce its incidence. It is an effort to ensure that we acknowledge the rampant sexual violence that exists, lest we forget.
This issue looks at news from 22nd April to 28th April 2018.
1. Actor and Comedian Bill Cosby convicted of drugging, sexually assaulting Constand
Cosby, 80, convicted of drugging and sexually assaulting Andrea Constand, a former basketball staffer at Temple University, inside his suburban Philadelphia mansion in 2004. He allegedly provided three unidentified blue pills that left her powerless when he pounced upon her. Cosby claimed the two had a consensual relationship.
Dozens of new accusers stepped forward against the comedian for similar misdeeds under the banner of #MeToo Campaign.
2. Nassar’s ex-boss charged with ‘criminal sexual conduct’
Convicted sex offender Larry Nassar’s boss has been charged with criminal sexual conduct during his time at Michigan State University. William Strampel, 70, is being accused of sexually propositioning female medical students. 50 photos of female genitalia, nude and semi-nude women in what appear to be “selfies,” and pornography have been found on his work computer.
The former dean at College of Osteopathic Medicine has been charged felony misconduct in a public office, fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct, and two additional misdemeanors.
3. Massage Therapist Accuses Stan Lee Of Sexual Misconduct
Maria Carballo claims the comic book legend acted inappropriately with her during two separate massage sessions in his Chicago hotel room at the Hyatt Regency in April 2017.
In a five-count lawsuit filed against Lee, 95, he is accused of sexual assault and battery, inappropriate touching and misconduct. He denied the allegations.
4. Asaram, sentenced to life in prison until death in rape case
Asaram convicted, under 15 different sections of the IPC, POCSO Act and Juvenile Justice Act will have to serve the rest of his natural life in jail. The two other convicts in the case have each been sentenced to 20 years in prison.
5. Law amended for death penalty in child rape cases below 12-year of age
Amid nationwide anquish and resentment over the mounting child rape cases, the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act has been amended to provide for the death penalty for rape of minors till 12 year of age.
The rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl in Kathua, Jammu and Kashmir, and other instances- such as in Surat has led an amendment to the POCSO Act.
