Sexual Violence: A Global Pandemic

Sexual violence is a global pandemic. One in three women experience sexual or physical violence – most likely from their intimate partner, according to a report from the World Health Organization. There is an urgent need to increase sensitisation regarding sexual violence and the awareness of consent and sexual violence amongst persons at large. In this series, we examine sexual violence and related issues that have come up in the news, on a weekly basis, published every Saturday. This is an attempt to improve awareness regarding incidents of sexual violence and related matters, so that we, as a society can take steps towards collective action to reduce its incidence. It is an effort to ensure that we acknowledge the rampant sexual violence that exists, lest we forget.
This issue looks at news from the 26th August to 1st September, 2017.
Techie jumps off train to escape Sexual Harassment
A female trainee engineer at Redington gulf, which is an IT company in Chennai, jumped off a train on Friday and has sustained head injuries. She was allegedly being sexually harassed by three men on the train and jumped to escaped from them. The railway police has arrested the three men accused of the crime.
Boy assault 5 year old girl, commits suicide
A 14 year old boy in Jabalpur hanged himself after allegedly sexually harassing a 5 year old girl. The boy was playing with the girl from his neighborhood when the girl’s mother saw him commit an indecent act and scolded him and told him that she will inform his parents about the incident, after which he allegedly committed suicide.
Accused of sexual Harassment Canadian MP resigns Liberal caucus
Canadian MP Darshan Kang who has been accused of sexually harassing his intern has resigned from the Liberal caucus. He has denied the charges and claimed that he has resigned to focus on clearing his name.
“I appreciate that Parliament has provided for due process, and a fair and objective policy for resolving this matter. I also very much appreciate that I am being provided an opportunity to provide my perspective to the independent investigator of the chief human resources office of Parliament,” he said.
University student files sexual harassment complaint
A female student at Himachal Pradesh University has filed a complaint against a guest lecturer alleging sexual harassment. She claims that he tried to pressurise her into getting physically intimate with him and would call her on her phone when he couldn’t find her in the college and harass her. She recorded one of these conversations and has presented it as proof.
Arrested for Fake Facebook profile
A 23 year old man harassed his ex-girlfriend by constantly texting her and also threatened her at her office. He created a fake Facebook profile of her calling her a call girl after which the girl filled a complaint and the man has been arrested. Police booked a case under section 354A (Sexual harassment and punishment for sexual harassment ) and 509 (Word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the IPC.
