Sexual violence is a global pandemic. One in three women experiences sexual or physical violence – most likely from their intimate partner, according to a report from the World Health Organization. There is an urgent need to increase sensitization regarding sexual violence and the awareness of consent and sexual violence amongst persons at large. In this series, we examine sexual violence and related issues that have come up in the news, on a weekly basis, published every Saturday. This is an attempt to improve awareness regarding incidents of sexual violence and related matters, so that we, as a society can take steps towards collective action to reduce its incidence. It is an effort to ensure that we acknowledge the rampant sexual violence that exists, lest we forget.
This issue looks at news from 22nd June to 8th June 2018.
1. Mississippi man accused of groping, stalking female jogger
48-year-old, Ronald Bryant is accused of groping one female and following another on the same day in two separate incidents while the victims were jogging. She was able to get his tag number that helped the police to identify the accused.
The creep has been accused of disturbing the public peace.
2. Charges against seven accused framed by Pathankot court in Kathua rape and murder case
A court in Pathankot framed charges against seven of the molestors accused of a brutal gang rape and murder of an eight-year-old female minor from the nomadic Bakherwal community who was kidnapped and raped in captivity in a small village temple in Kathua, Jammu and Kashmir.
3. Man accused of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old in parking lot
At Bay City, Michigan, a 19-year-old man is accused of sexually harassing a minor girl. He is accused of having sexual intercourse with her and performed oral sex on her. Wilson agreed that he had sexual intercourse with the victim at parking lot of a restaurant.
Although Wilson claimed it was consensual, at Michigan the age of consent for sexual activity is 16.
4. Harvey Weinstein pleads not guilty to rape, sex-crime charges
American film producer Harvey Weinstein accused of rape, sexual assault and sexual abuse of dozens of women in the film industry over a period of at least 30 years pleads not guilty. He denied “any non-consensual sex”. Shortly after these reports, Weinstein was dismissed, expelled and disappeared from public view.
5. Bollywood singer stalked and threatened by ‘fan’
Rajeshkumar Shukla, 30 was arrested for sending abusive and lewd text messages to a 26-year-old Bollywood playback singer. He has been accused of stalking and threatening her. Shukla claimed to be a fan of the victim and was arrested within a few hours of the case being registered.
