Sexual violence is a global pandemic. One in three women experiences sexual or physical violence – most likely from their intimate partner, according to a report from the World Health Organization. There is an urgent need to increase sensitization regarding sexual violence and the awareness of consent and sexual violence amongst persons at large. In this series, we examine sexual violence and related issues that have come up in the news, on a weekly basis, published every Saturday. This is an attempt to improve awareness regarding incidents of sexual violence and related matters, so that we, as a society can take steps towards collective action to reduce its incidence. It is an effort to ensure that we acknowledge the rampant sexual violence that exists, lest we forget.
This issue looks at 6th January to 12th January 2019.
- Actor Craig McLachlan charged with sex offences by Victoria Police
McLachlan, a 53- year-old well-known Australian actor, has been charged with one count of common law assault, eight counts of indecent assault, and one count of attempted indecent assault. McLachlan’s three female co-stars accused him of bullying and sexual misconduct during the tour of The Rocky Horror Show in 2014. He denies the allegations.
- Markham high school teacher and coach charged with 2 counts of sexual assault
Anthony Ganuelas of Markham, a 36-year-old high school teacher at St. Theresa of Lisieux Catholic High School in Richmond Hill has been charged with two counts of sexual assault. The accused is alleged to have committed the assaults at holiday parties, a year apart i.e. 2017 and 2018.
York Catholic District School Board announced that he has, “Been removed from his teaching assignment, as per board practice and put on administrative leave.”
- Maid in Hong Kong fights for justice against the abuser
An Indonesian domestic helper who was 25 at the time of the incident was raped by her employer’s son-in-law five days into her job. The accused allegedly forced himself on her and raped her in his home on October 21, 2017. Traces of her blood and the man’s semen were found on a bedsheet, and attack left abrasions on the woman’s genitals but Fung, 27, pleaded not guilty for the crime.
- U.S. judge dismisses Judd’s sex harassment claim against Weinstein
A US district judge said that the sexual harassment law within a professional relationship does not cover the claims made by Ashley Judd against the disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein and hence threw out actress’ sexual harassment lawsuit against the mega-producer leaving her with the sole option of suing him on the grounds of defamation.
Weinstein is to stand trial later this year in New York on five charges, including rape, involving two other women.
The actor’s career has spanned decades and included prominent roles on Neighbours and Home and Away.
- 4-year-old girl assaulted in public toilet
A man allegedly assaulted the girl when she visited the toilet at a park at Coolum Beach on the Sunshine Coast. Police were on the hunt for the attacker while investigating a complaint of an indecent assault and appealed to the masses to come forward and contact the police if they may know of something.
