Safecity Monthly Updates- October 2023

Safecity is committed to creating safer communities for everyone. Our goal is to empower citizens by helping them understand the potential risks they could face in different neighbourhoods. We can do this by sharing our experiences or others anonymously and make these stories available for all. The platform serves law enforcement agencies with information on sexual harassment and other crimes occurring in public and private spaces. The platform’s data helps keep public spaces safe by enabling authorities to keep track of incidents and prevent sexual harassment in the future.

Mumbai

Here’s what some Mumbaikars have to say about our ongoing Rainbow Circles Project. If you would like to join the experience please write to pragati@reddotfoundation.org

“The session were really helpful to understand the importance of safety precautions, understanding the situation of humans with a larger perspective and not just to see things from a single perspective, importance of equality, acceptance. And also understanding the twisted situation. And those fun moments were really a stress buster for me from our extreme day. Had a lot of fun and was able to learn a lot. Thank you.” – Khyati from Raheja College of Architecture

“The session gave me a new perspective, I personally don’t talk about mental health and other things that give me stress or anxiety but there I was feeling relieved after the session talking about these things. It helped me to understand the difference between the important aspects of everyday life like how to be empathetic to a person; what is harassment and it’s impact on a person, how can we help people to distract from a harassment situation and a lot more.

The sessions have changed my views by giving me a new perspective on gender and how people identify themselves, it helped me even to focus on my mental health.

I will incorporate what I learned by being more empathetic and open to people and alert in public areas if there is any unusual activity happening in my surroundings to prevent harassment and to not judge people for their gender. The important thing is to use the Safecity app if I see someone being harassed or being troubled in public, I’ll take action on it and report it from that area.” – Aditya from SIES College, Nerul

“First of all I’d like to send my gratitude for giving me this wonderful opportunity for representing this project in my College.

I learned a lot throughout the 3 day training session that was provided to us by Ms. Pragati Vaishya, Program & Outreach Officer at Red Dot Foundation.

The sessions have made a positive and knowledgeable impact on my life as now I’m aware of how to deal with harassments and different ways to protect myself or any other women or men who are going through the same.

My take away from the sessions would be to create a safer society for both men and women, also other genders need to be accepted by the society. I would never make anyone feel left out just because they didn’t fit in today’s society’s standards or beliefs. We all are humans at the end of the day and everyone should be treated equally!

This session also helped me to change my views on safety and feeling secure. It made me realize how Red Dot Foundation is helping to make the country more safer.” Heeba Shaikh from FYIT, SIES ASCN

“I am currently heading the Faridabad Project – Public Space Audit.

This project involves gathering data from specific locations and completing audits related to women’s safety in Kheri Pul in Faridabad.

The goal is to find out and analyze real time data on women’s safety in these areas and conduct necessary interventions that will help spread awareness on reducing street harassment. We have currently conducted over 500 audits in markets, residential areas and nearby localities and are aiming at a target of 3000 audits by mid December.

We will soon start with smaller interventions bi weekly and conduct activities to spread awareness. We are encouraging women and girls to document incidents of sexual harassment and take relevant action for their safety and mobility.” – Soumyaa Hariharan, Project & Outreach Officer, New Delhi.

302 students attended our ongoing ‘Women in Motion’ sessions and we kickstarted with our project ‘Rainbow Circles’ in three colleges, CMR Institute of Technology, Sai Ram College of Engineering and Oxford College of Engineering, conducted by our Bengaluru Project & Outreach Officer, Monika Rajashekar.

After our introductory session to Rainbow Circles, here’s what Murugan from Sai Ram College had to say, “We did take an oath to see a person for who they are rather than classify them by gender”.

If you are in Bengaluru and want to participate in our sessions, you can drop an email to Monika@reddotfoundation.org. Let’s be the change we want to see!

Meet the Intern of the Month

“I always believe, when you channel your energy into your interests, your manifested world becomes a powerful reality.

When we talk about the empowerment of the marginalised community, especially women, it is a collective shared responsibility transcending through national borders but it has to begin somewhere. And for me, it begins here. In the very region I live and the very place where I could contribute my share in this collective responsibility.” – Sijal Sagarika, student at St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai
