Sexual violence is a global pandemic. One in three women experiences sexual or physical violence – most likely from their intimate partner, according to a report from the World Health Organization. There is an urgent need to increase sensitization regarding sexual violence and the awareness of consent and sexual violence amongst persons at large. In this series, we examine sexual violence and related issues that have come up in the news, on a weekly basis, published every Saturday. This is an attempt to improve awareness regarding incidents of sexual violence and related matters, so that we, as a society can take steps towards collective action to reduce its incidence. It is an effort to ensure that we acknowledge the rampant sexual violence that exists, lest we forget.
This issue looks at news from 1st to 7th July 2018.
1. 40 year veteran of Boy Scouts in New Jersey arrested for child porn
James Roberts, 74, a Boy Scout leader who had a four-decade-old history with the organization was charged with possession of child porn. Several digital devices have been found in his home containing images and video of child pornography. Roberts admitted using a file sharing program to download and distribute it.
2. Carmel Coach faces federal charges after allegedly filming sex with student athlete
John C. Goelz, 29, a former assistant swim coach Carmel High School faces federal charges for sexual exploitation of a minor and possession of child pornography. He allegedly filmed himself having sex with a 17-year-old girl.
3. Man who promised immigrants a safe place to stay allegedly molested girl
Jose Alcides Benites, 59, allegedly molested a 5-year-old girl whose immigrant family had been promised a safe haven by him. He is charged of lewd acts with a child. The girl’s mother reportedly saw Benites touching her daughter underneath her clothes.
4. The Supreme Court of India re-visited its verdict related to homosexuality
The five-judge Bench — headed by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra began to re-visit its December 2013 verdict of the Supreme Court, which upheld the criminalisation of gay sex and dismissed the LGBT community as a negligible part of the population while virtually denying them the right of choice and sexual orientation.
5. 2-year-old male sexually assaulted in Kolkata
A case under the POSCO Act has been registered for alleged sexual abuse of a male minor at a play school. The minor’s private parts were swollen and bleeding due to the insertion of a sharp object. The principal of the school refused to acknowledge his father’s complaint and denied the allegations.
